Placed in the heart of Montmartre, near the Sacré Cœur, the Place du Tertre is filled with artists and takes visitors back to the Roaring Twenties in just a blink of an eye. Listed as a historical monument, it is one of the most popular squares in Paris.
Feel free to come, have a look and why not leave with your portrait in hand, for a one-of-a-kind souvenir of Paris!
History and development
Source of inspiration for many famous artists such as Pissarro, Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh, Modigliani, Picasso and many others, this square, located in the 18th arrondissement, encouraged various artistic movements such as Impressionism and Surrealism. Since 1980, it is run by Paris City Hall.
Today, the Place du Tertre is full of restaurants and souvenir shops; however, it never lost its charm and still attracts a large number of artists in its center. There are now 298 artists who display their original works in the famous “Carré aux artistes” (artist’s square). Each space is shared by two different artists who alternate every other day.
Needless to say, spots are very hard to get: every year, a contest is launched and spaces are redistributed. In addition to their portfolio, artists are now judged on their creativity in their respective fields thanks to a practical test.
Some incredible artists
Who are these famous artists who compete to earn a space in this square?
Between painters, portraitists, caricaturist and silhouette artists, there is something for everyone. If you want an authentic souvenir of the city, this is your chance. In 15 minutes, Paris’ best artists paint your portrait, humorous or not, or cut out your silhouette on sheets of paper at affordable prices, providing a unique and original work of art. In addition, the best painters offer you their most beautiful landscapes.
Be careful though, some places in the square, outside the “Carré aux artistes” are scattered with artists who provide poor copies or paintings at very high prices, tarnishing the reputation of the square’s artists.
Where to eat in Tertre Quarter ?
The Place du Tertre is surrounded by small restaurants. Their terraces occupy the centre of the area during high season from April to November. We recommend two great typical restaurants to discover.
For great French cuisine around the square, there is nothing better than La Bohême du Tertre restaurant, dating from the early 20th century. Greeted with a warm welcome, you can enjoy everything from fish to duck and crepes to ice cream on a terrace where you can admire the beauty of the square and its artists.La Bohème du Tertre
