A glimpse of History
The famous “Flowers and Birds Market (Marché aux fleurs et aux oiseaux)” has been located since 1808 on the Ile de la Cité, Place Louis Lépine, and Quai de la Corse along the Seine. Halfway between a covered and open-air market, the flower market is made up of six 1900-era pavilions, around tree-lined walkways. In these stalls, you can find a very wide variety of flowers, plants, and shrubs, and even decorative items, especially around Christmas. The market is open every weekday from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
More specifically, on Sunday (animal lovers take note!) the flowers give way to birds, some very rare ones, and some rodents too. These are sold with all kinds of accessories, such as cages or birdseed.
Since June 7, 2014, on the occasion of the state visit of the British Queen Elizabeth II who came to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day, this market has been renamed. Indeed, during her visit to the market, the British head of state unveiled a new street sign with the name “Marché aux fleurs Reine Elizabeth II (Queen Elizabeth II Flower Market)”, which does nothing to detract from the authenticity of the place.
